Icemaker Water Line

A refrigerator water line is essential to any model that has an ice maker, water dispenser, or both. This water line is connected to the rear of the refrigerator from a cold-water supply line. Step 1 — Locate the Closest Cold-Water Supply Line To connect the refrigerator to a water line, first find a close cold-water supply line. This line could be one from the basement, the kitchen sink, or elsewhere. Step 2 — Drill a Hole for the Water Line Pull the refrigerator out from the wall, so that you have enough room to work. Then, drill a hole through the side of a cabinet or through the floor to thread the line through, depending on where your supply line is located. Step 3 — Connect the Water Line to the Refrigerator Next, wrap the threads on the water-line connector that is on the back of the fridge with thread-seal tape to lubricate the threads. Once the tape is on the threads, connect the water line to the threaded section. Use an adjustable wrench to tighten the nut onto the refrigerator.

Contact Author Learning About Fridge Water Lines When hooking up a water line to a fridge ice maker or a door water supply, you want to use the correct materials to ensure the water flows well and everything is hooked up correctly with minimal chance of leaks. Many refrigerators these days supply a source for drinking water inside or on the door and will make ice cubes for you.

To have a water dispenser or ice maker in your fridge, you need to be able to get water from your cold water supply to your fridge in an efficient way. Something that you might not have considered is what types of plumbing material are you going to use. Even if you are hiring a plumber, you should be aware of the different options available and what they mean to you.

Mar 26,  · If you don’t have a convenient water supply pipe and valve near the refrigerator, you must instead find another spot to hook up the water line. Usually, this will be at some other existing water hookup point, like the water supply lines connected to your sink faucet or dishwasher.

I last updated this page: My first edition was: Yes, that is what it originally cost in today’s dollars before the current era of cheaper imported appliances. This luxury ice machine should not be confused with the ordinary ice maker that is part of a refrigerator-freezer; the former magnificent engine makes crystal-clear, flavor-free, ice cubes.

A refrigerator-freezer ice maker produces cloudy ice in a stale-garlic flavor, typically in odd crescent shapes, and stuck together. The ice machine’s product is clear, pure, flavorless ice cubes which are luxuriously wet and loose, like a handful of flawless diamonds scooped from a mountain spring. Owning this machine once in your life will spoil you, like many of my correspondents who say they will never again return to refrigerator ice.

Besides this delicious indulgence, the ice machine also makes an excellent source for controlled cold-plate chilling necessary to the operation of an even greater luxury, the home soda fountain see my page on home carbonation. On this page, however, we are only concerned with the ice and how to keep it coming. When a slab of ice reaches the finished thickness, a thermostat triggers the harvest cycle, which reverses the chiller to warm the evaporator plate, until the ice slab slides onto a cutter grid.

Jul 11,  · Important: Make sure you leave extra tubing coiled behind the refrigerator, so you can move the refrigerator when necessary. Cut the cold water line under the sink or in the basement and attach a copper T-fitting. Attach a water valve to the T-fitting. This will control the water flow and water pressure to the refrigerator.

How to Install Plumbing for an Ice Maker Refrigerators with automatic ice makers are a great convenience, especially on a hot day. However, there is nothing automatic about getting a water line hooked up to the ice maker. If you are lucky, there will be a hookup in your kitchen wall near the refrigerator. If not, you will need to run a line to the nearest cold water pipe, which is probably in the floor below your kitchen.

An hour project of drilling and running flexible hose is well worth the pleasure of ice on demand. Tapping the Cold Water Line 1 Shut off the main water supply to your home. The folks at GE Appliances recommend using a vertical pipe, if available. If you must use a horizontal pipe, place the hole for the valve either on the top or side of the pipe. Avoid using the bottom of the pipe, as this may draw sediment into the ice maker. Take caution to not allow water to seep into your drill and make sure to only pierce one side of the pipe.

Tighten the screws on the clamps until the sealing washer swells. Avoid over-tightening; you can crush the copper pipe if you apply too much pressure.

A refrigerator with an automated ice maker and a built-in water dispenser does absolutely nothing if you do not have a water line to connect to it.

You can buy icemaker installation kits at home centers and some hardware stores, but we don’t recommend them. Most contain a saddle valve which doesn’t meet plumbing code in some regions and some contain plastic tubing which can dry, split and leak over time. We recommend more permanent valves and copper tubing for better water flow and reduced risk of leaks, which can cause extensive damage. To start, locate the cold water source nearest to the refrigerator—perhaps under the kitchen sink, below the floor, in the wall or even in the ceiling.

In this kitchen, we ran the new water line from under the kitchen sink through cabinets. We removed the drainpipes to clearly show this project. Be sure to keep the tubing above storage areas and behind drawers if possible to avoid tube damage. If you need to drill through floors or walls, check for air ducts, electrical wiring, plumbing or other possible impediments first.

How to Fix a Leak on a Copper Water Line for a Fridge

About an hour for each install Anyone who has had to crawl into a kitchen cabinet to change a water faucet and supply lines can attest to the fact that it is one of the harder things to do. Cramped for space and limited in your movements, you have to reach over your head in a confined area and attempt to loosen the supply lines, loosen the corroded nuts that hold in the fixture, and then ensure that nothing leaks when you’re done. Running a line for this component is relatively easy for the average DIYer.

Step 1 — Drill an Access Hole for the Line Check the basement directly underneath the refrigerator for an available cold water supply line and determine where the hole must be drilled for the water line. Drill the access hole. Do this carefully to ensure you do not drill into a baseboard or too far into the room—the hole must be under the refrigerator.

Apr 29,  · 1. If necessary, drill a ⅝-inch-diameter hole through the floor directly behind the refrigerator. 2. Turn off the water to a nearby cold-water supply line. 3. Use a strip of emery cloth to buff-clean a section of the copper water line. 4. Cut into the cold-water line using a tubing cutter. 5.

If the refrigerator is between two walls, you will have to pull it completely out to get behind it. Be careful when you pull the refrigerator out because the copper water line is coiled up behind the refrigerator, and you don’t want to kink it when you move the refrigerator. Locate the icemaker shutoff valve, which is usually located beneath the kitchen sink. Turn the valve clockwise to shut it off. Operate the icemaker’s water feature to make sure the water is not on.

Go behind the refrigerator and inspect for damage. You either will see an obvious split or crack in the copper line or you may not.
